More detailed information about the snowpack:

Descending through 6600’ on a W aspect there was an immediate change in the feel of the snowpack which prompted us to  check what changed in the pack.

Change was from a loose dry with slough to the same loose dry becoming more cohesive, shooting cracks, and popping.

A hand pit revealed a layer not present in higher elevations - a crust roughly 55cm from the surface, to which the storm slab had not adhered; this crust was resting on top of about 1cm of 0.5-1mm hail-like ice.
